Slovenia: Return to the essentials: Rimske Terme

Category: Design Travelers;

Storyteller: Ines Delić, architect;

„A pearl in an intact oasis of nature, among mighty vegetation and surrounded by beneficial effects of thermal springs will wake up a wish for creativity, relaxation and rest“, a description that truly describes this architectural complex under the mountains Stražnik (655m) and Kopitnik (914m), 17km from Celje in Slovenia. And that is what i did on my last day off…i went for relaxation and rest!

The place Rimske Toplice is an old spa town where about 1000 inhabitants live. It was first mentioned in 1486 in the writings of Aquileia. Centuries later, in 1840 the baths really flourished.

In that same year the merchant Gustav Adolf Ulrich from Trieste bought the spas, on behalf of his wife Amalia , because he overcame his health issues with the beneficial effects of the thermal water.

From the 19th century it was widely known for its beautiful surrounding area and nature so numerous royal guests visited the baths , such as the English Princess and Prussian throne successor in title Victoria, Napoleon’s sister Caroline, the Austrian writer Franz Grillparzer, the Serbian writer Vuk Karadzic, Emperor Ferdinand , Archduke Johann and many others.

Mjesto Rimske Toplice je stari kupališni grad, gdje živi oko 1000 stanovnika. Prvi put spominje 1486. u spisima Aquileia.

The modernization and extension of the thermal baths was a complex project with an extensive volume of data. The Architecture office Arhiveda accepted the order in conjunction with the “Waaaow” group, and worked in accordance with the BIM method (Building Information Modeling).

Rafko Napast, the Slovenian architect who runs the office with his wife has designed a new building that is naturally integrated between the two existing buildings, thanks to its curved form and the curtain-wall facing made of metal rods and plates in different shades of green. With its sophisticated, thoughtful and tasteful design, the new renovated spa complex reflects an architectural sensitivity to its historical heritage. The Interior is held minimalistic but playful. Exposed concrete cubes that create a variety of interesting visual connections are at the same time used as spaces to lie down and rest. The numerous quotes in Latin by the sages and philosophers of ancient Rome in the corridors and in the rooms of the spa are an eternal reminder of the history that took place there. To say any more would be superfluous, so pack your swimming suit and see for yourself!
