We all know about the hard and hurtful history Warsaw went through. After WWII there was almost nothing left of the historical buildings and the Warsaw inhabitants went through great efforts to rebuild what was left of the city. So today, the conservation of everything what in any way contributes to their city history is of a big significance. At this point I want to tell you the story of Hala Koszyki.

Svi smo upoznati s teškom i bolnom historijom Varšave.

Hala Targowa Koszyki, which was once called Bazar Ludowy or the “People’s bazaar”, was built in 1906-1908 on ul. Koszykowa in Warsaw on the site of the former Koszyki residence. In subsequent years the hall continued to be used as a city market. Hala was designed in art nouveau style by the main Warsaw architect, Juliusz Dzierżanowski. So, almost one hundred and ten years after the launch of its construction, Hala Koszyki has now returned to Warsaw.

Since 1906 Hala Koszyki has undergone a few deconstruction and reconstruction periods, but it was always a meeting and get-together place, where the residents would do their daily groceries shopping but also just meet to have a chit chat over a delicious meal. Hala Koszyki was always pounding with life – it was loud and crowded both inside and in front of the market, where market traders and barrow boys stood right next to the smartly dressed people and everybody was doing their business.

In 2012 Hala Targowa Koszyki started to restore Koszyki its’ previous glory. In autumn 2016 Hala came back to life as Warsaw’s social hotspot and culinary center, where you can choose to eat a fantastic meal in one of numerous restaurants and pubs or buy fresh products to prepare a delicious meal at home. Besides the 18 restaurants, the building now includes 11 grocery stores, one of which is Bazar Koszyki, a pharmacy, a book store and a home decoration center.

Koszyki is a coherent combination of historic architecture with a contemporary design. The project is distinguished among other developments with e.g. responsible approach in materials. The Historic hall materials such as steel construction and bricks have been reused in the complex again. Thanks to Hala Koszyki Warsaw joined the world’s metropolis like New York, London, Oslo, Rotterdam or Florence where such places teem with life around tables laden with all cuisines of the world.
